Detailed

  1. What is Lantus and What is it Used for?

Lantus is an injectable solution containing insulin glargine. Insulin Glargine is a modified insulin, very similar to human insulin. Lantus is used to treat diabetes in adults, adolescents and children aged 2 years and over. Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not produce enough insulin for maintaining normal blood glucose. Insulin Glargine has an action for decreasing the value of constant and prolonged blood sugar.

  1. What do you need to know before you use Lantus?

Do not use Lantus

  • If you are allergic to insulin glargine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Warnings and Precautions

Before using Lantus, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Strictly observe dose instructions, monitoring (blood and urine analyzes), diet, physical activity (physical work and physical exercise) and injection technique, as you have discussed with your doctor.

If the value of your blood sugar is too low (hypoglycemia), follow the instructions for hypoglycemia.

Travels

Before you leave on a trip, ask your doctor's advice. You may need to discuss:

  • the availability of insulin used in your country you will visit,
  • How can insulin, syringes,
  • Correct insulin keeping during the trip,
  • Time of meals and insulin administration during the trip,
  • Possible effects of time zone changes,
  • New health risks, possible in the countries you will visit,
  • What you need to do in emergency situations when you do not feel good or when you get sick.

Trauma and Diseases

In the following situations, the treatment of your diabetes may require additional attention (insulin dose adjustment, blood tests and urine):

  • If you are sick or have suffered a major trauma, your blood glucose can grow (hyperglycemia).
  • If you do not eat enough, your blood glucose value can drop too much (hypoglycemia).

In most cases, you will need a doctor. Make sure you can contact your doctor quickly.

If you have type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes), do not interrupt insulin and continue to make suitable carbohydrate intake. Always tell those who do you or those who treat you that you need insulin.

Some patients with type 2 diabetes diagnosed long before and heart disease or who had stroke, which were treated with pioglitazone and insulin developed heart failure. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you experience signs of heart failure, such as unusual sensation of lack of air or rapid weight loss or localized swelling.

Lantus along with other Medicines

Certain medicines cause changes in blood glucose (decrease or growth or both, depending on the situation). In each case, insulin dose adjustment may be required to avoid glycemic values, which are too low or are too grown. Take care when you start or when you stop using another medicine.

Pregnancy and Breast-feeding

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations before taking any medicine.

Tell your doctor if you planned to get pregnant or pregnant. It may be necessary to modify the dose of insulin during pregnancy and after birth. Particularly careful control of your diabetes and prevention of hypoglycemia are important for your child's health.

If you are breast-feeding, ask your doctor's advice because it may be necessary to modify insulin and diet doses.

  1. How to use Lantus

Dose

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Depending on your lifestyle, the results of the sugar quantity tests (glucose) in the blood and the previous use of insulin, your doctor:

  • Will decide what daily dose of Lantus is required and what time,
  • Will tell you when to check your blood glucose value and if urinary tests are needed,
  • Will tell you when you need to inject a higher or lower dose of Lantus.

Lantus is a prolonged insulin. Your doctor may recommend you use it in combination with a short-acting insulin or tablets used to treat the high blood sugar values.

The value of glycaemia can be influenced by many factors. You need to know these factors so you can react properly to changes in blood glucose and prevent its decrease or excessive growth. For more information, see the text in the border at the end of this leaflet.

Lantus for Children and Adolescents

Lantus can be used in teenagers and children aged 2 years and over. There is no experience of using Lantus in children under 2 years of age.

Frequency of Administration

You need a Lantus injection daily at the same time of day.

Administration Method

Lantus is injecting under the skin. Do not inject chain in the vein because this path will change and will be able to determine hypoglycemia.

Your doctor will show you in which region of the skin you need to inject your Lantus. At each injection, change the place of administration within the respective cutaneous region.
